A mesmerizing historical fiction story of the intimate life of one of Hollywood’s most glamorous icons
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
SUMMARY
Evelyn Hugo, a 79 year old Hollywood movie icon is finally ready to share the secrets behind her glamorous and scandalous life. Everyone is astounded when Evelyn chooses the unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant to write her life story. Monique is not exactly at the top of her game. Her professional life is stagnant and her husband has recently left her. Monique is just as surprised as everyone else, but secretly hoping this opportunity will boost her career. Evelyn shares with Monique, her story of ambition, special friendships and forbidden love, and the story behind each of her seven marriages. And what stories they are! Monique is entranced by Evelyn’s revelations, until she hears the one thing that explains everything that matters to her.
“People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is ‘you’re safe with me’ -that’s intimacy.”
REVIEW
THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO is a mesmerizing story touching on race, ambition, sexuality, and what it takes to be a woman in control. I was totally enamored with Evelyn's larger than life story and her character. She is full of flaws and questionable decisions, but those are the very things that make her come to life on the pages. She is real. My favorite part of the book was Evelyn’s strength and how she totally controlled the telling of her own story and the poignant advice she shared with Monique. I so appreciated Monique’s role in the story as an unknown journalist who lacked self-confidence until she meets Evelyn. Watching her evolution, and the impact Evelyn had on Monique, was moving.
Taylor Jenkins Reid’s story is creative and her dialog is lyrical. According to Reid, Evelyn Hugo was loosely based in part on actress Elizabeth Taylor, who was married eight times to seven different men and on Ava Gardner, who reveal the secrets of her life to a journalist which was eventually published as Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations after her death. THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO was selected as the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction. I listened to the Audible version of Evelyn Hugo and found it very enjoyable and entertaining.
“No matter how strong you are, no matter how smart you are or tough you can be, the world will find a way to break you. And when it does, the only thing you can do is hold on.”
“When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things.”
